SoFried September Meeting – Deploying to Azure & DNN Platform Announcements

We had another great Southern Fried DNN User Group meeting last night. Our featured speaker was David Rodriguez of DNNCorp who gave us a great demonstration of deploying and managing DNN on Azure. Then Joe Brinkman who provided some community updates around DNN v9 and the Admin/Host area of DNN.

As we always do, Ryan Moore of Moore Creative Co lead us off with some announcements…

Announcements

  • nvquicksite: nvquicksite is a tool used to make installing DNN easy. In the next release nvquicksite will support installing Evoq packages as well
  • DNN Summit: The DNN Summit call for speakers ends today (Friday, September 16, 2016). Keep in mind that speakers get a free pass to the conference. This year’s conference also features a ½ day “Intro to DNN” training session that has not previously occurred at any DNN conferences.
  • GitHub: Recently DNN has completed the move to GitHub. This follows suit with most open source projects and makes it easy for developers to submit “pull requests” or code enhancements to the platform.

Deploying & Managing DNN on Microsoft Azure Platform

David Rodriguez of DNNCorp

David Rodriguez then gave a hands on demonstration of how to not only deploy DNN into Azure, but also how to go about managing a DNN instance in Azure. I was remote and during this portion of the meeting my connection dropped twice so I missed a few bits here and there.

During David’s session he showed us:

  • Installing DNN on Azure
  • Pricing structure
  • Scaling options
  • DNN & Application Insights

Cloud Models

DNN v9 and An Updated Admin/Host Area

After David’s session DNN Co-Founder Joe Brinkman gave us some really interesting community updates. His updates were centered around DNN 9 and the Admin/Host area of DNN.

DNN v9 Vision

The main takeaways from Joe’s portion of the meeting were, regarding DNN v9:

  • Minimize reliance web forms
  • Entire admin UI to be SPA based
  • Persona bar will be key part of the Admin update
  • The application will be lighter, faster, & provide a better user experience
  • Platform vs. Evoq experiences were drastically different, now they will fall back in line
  • DNN 9 will mostly be admin overhaul
  • The persona bar is built using React + webpack, Babel, ECMS 6, and NPM are also leveraged
