DNN 10 Upgrade Tips & Discussion

Jeremy walks through a full upgrade path and shares practical troubleshooting techniques to help you confidently move from DNN 9.10.x to DNN 10.

Recommendations and Presentation Notes:

  • 🔧 Live upgrade walkthrough: 9.10.2 → 10 with key prep steps:
    • ✅ Verify 3rd-party module compatibility; remove unused extensions and modules.
    • 🧼 Clean out old install zips in /Install and unused DLLs; backup before and after each step.
    • 🔍 Check /bin versions via File Explorer’s “File Version” column.
  • 🧑‍💻 Troubleshooting examples: fix UserController usage with .Instance; handle broken skins by falling back to Zinnia; remove old skin controls like leftmenu and nav; note TooSexy quirks (images, patron mode).
  • 🧠 Pro tips & tooling: use ?mode=upgrade in the URL for verbose output; set autoUpgrade="true" temporarily in web.config; read installer logs and run SQL for deeper diagnosis; watch for outdated Newtonsoft.Json DLLs and add binding redirects if needed.
  • 🧪 Safety first: always clone the site to a test server before touching production.
  • 🎨 Branding & UI: Persona Bar customizations demoed; DNN 10’s new Styles module enables per-site branding via theme variables.
  • ⚠️ Compatibility notes: if any module still uses Telerik, DNN 10 will remove it and may break that module—fully remove Telerik before upgrading.
  • 💾 SQL Server caution: databases from SQL Server 2022 cannot be restored on 2019 without conversion.
  • 📚 Reference site: Jeremy’s resources and nightly builds at acu4.com (upgrade logs and workarounds).
  • 🗓️ Next SoFri: Thursday, May 15 — topic TBD (likely more DNN 10 experience-sharing and deep dives).
